wedding cake toppers

Personalised wedding cake toppers are becoming more popular as weddings are less conventional. Last week end the wedding cake topper was for Jenny and Matt who decided to combine the wedding with their first child's christening. What a wonderful event!

The cake topper was perfect - this is what the Bride and Groom had to say; 'Just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for the fabulous cake you made - your wonderful work got many oohs and ahhs from everyone at the do and we especially loved the brilliant figurines you made! We had a fabulous day and the cake helped tip it all off! Thank you again for all your help and at the short notice too!

Wedding cake designs

I often get asked how I get to my final wedding cake designs. The answer is pretty simple. I discuss with the couple their wedding day; Where is the wedding? A simple question but with lots of answers. Some of the venues are architecturally very intricate and interesting. Art Nouveau and Deco can look wonderful on a cake design. What are you wearing? There are often wonderful patterns and lace designs on wedding gowns. What flowers have you chosen? What is your colour scheme? Do you have any special interests? Designing the wedding cake for a cake designer can be the hardest part, but also the most satisfying. It includes not only the visual, but also the structural design which is not always straight forward. I always enjoy creating a new and unique wedding cake design. 5 Tier wedding cake

Are you looking for a 5 tier wedding cake, with an elegant, but simple design? Natasha's could be the one for you. She did not want any flowers on her cake but piped lace instead. Having the lace only on alternate cakes and adding bit of bling with the brooches worked really well. The brooch was silver with pearls and diamonds. To incorporate this into the wedding cake design, I placed a string of pearls on the base of each cake and edible pearls into the lace design. Diamante cake

At last I have come up with a solution for my brides who want diamantes on their wedding cakes. I have had so many enquiries for diamante wedding cakes. Yes, you can get edible diamantes. Unfortunately they are not very successful, as they tend to lose their sparkle very quickly depending on the weather and then tend to look like lumps of sugar. It has been known for people to put diamante pins into cakes, a rather dangerous solution, as the diamantes can fall off the pins. I have talked to caterers who have been very unhappy about picking diamante pins out of cakes, as the responsibility falls on them. Up until now I have only put diamantes into dummy cake. This weekend, Fiona the bride came up with the idea of putting diamante brooches onto what was my Nicolette cake and replaced the calla lilies with orchids. I was very happy with my diamante wedding cake -what do you think?

One of my favourite cakes of the year

This years wedding season is slowly coming to an end. It's time to reflect. It has been the busiest season yet. It is a pity I had to turn so many people away, I was almost fully booked up at the beginning of January for the summer 2009 season. It has been quite a creative year, people wanting quite unusual designs. One of my favourite wedding cakes this year is the one Julia ordered for her Sister's wedding. It was the most time consuming cake, but worth every effort. I felt it was a very romantic design, a true wedding cake.

Chona and Rich wedding cakes

I am slowly coming to the end of the really busy wedding season, its been a long and exceptionally busy summer. I really enjoyed creating something very different for
Chona and Rich, unique in colour, with summerfruit applique and without sugar flowers. I ended up making 60 instead of 50 mini cakes, as my cake tins only allowed me to make that many - Good news for Chona and Rich!

I often recieve questions about suitability of certain designs. I had one today..."we are having a three tiered cake with the draping flowers. it is sponge with jam and buttercream i noticed that you said it can be a problem with this type of cake. Our cake maker hasn't given us this impression can you offer any information on how it is a problem and how to stop it causing problems. thanks very much"
When considering your cake design, Take into consideration climate. Icing is, actually, rather heavy, So if the temp. goes above 30 degrees in a marquee, for example, iced drapes' weight can cause the bulging waistline often seen on cakes where a soft filling is used. At this temp buttercream will melt!
